Olympics and S-Bahn

The Donnersbergerbrücke connects northern Marsfeld with the southern district of Schwanthalerhöhe — crossing the Hauptbahnhof rail tracks, a few hundred metres west of the Hackerbrücke. As part of the works for the 1972 Olympic Games it was substantially rebuilt and given an S-Bahn station, which has been part of the trunk line ever since.

The Donnersbergerbrücke S-Bahn station is used by hundreds of thousands of travellers each day — above all in the morning and evening as a commuter hub for the western S-Bahn lines and as an interchange for Hauptbahnhof. The bridge itself is architecturally unassuming — function before form — but indispensable for Munich's commuter traffic.
