This walk moves chronologically through the eras — from antiquity at Königsplatz through the Old and New Masters to Pop Art at the Brandhorst — and ends at the Academy, where Kandinsky, Klee and Albers studied.

Ancient sculpture in Klenze's temple building (1830) — the world's first public sculpture museum. The start of the journey through time: Greek and Roman sculpture.

Opposite the Glyptothek: Greek vases, Etruscan jewellery and ancient applied art in the Corinthian counterpart on the square.

A leap into modernism: the world's most important Blue Rider collection in Lenbach's former artist's villa, complemented by contemporary art.

European painting from the Middle Ages to the Rococo: Dürer, Altdorfer, Rubens, Rembrandt. Klenze's building (1836) was a model for the museums of Europe.

Art of the 19th century — Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, Art Nouveau. The building is being refurbished; key works are currently shown in the Alte Pinakothek and the Sammlung Schack.

Four museums under one roof: classic modern and contemporary art, graphics, architecture, design. Braunfels' rotunda (2002) is the design centrepiece of the Kunstareal.

The colourful ceramic façade (Sauerbruch Hutton, 2009) houses Cy Twombly, Andy Warhol and Damien Hirst — the youngest and most colourful building of the Kunstareal.

Akademie der Bildenden Künste

Gottfried von Neureuther's grand building (1886) at the northern edge of the area. Franz von Stuck taught here; Kandinsky, Klee and Josef Albers studied here — the nucleus of Munich modernism.
