This walk links the district's best-known landmarks into one continuous stroll. It starts at Königsplatz, Munich's stone homage to the Acropolis, leads through one of Europe's densest museum quarters and ends at the green western edge of the English Garden. The route is walkable throughout and largely flat.

Leo von Klenze's Doric city gate (1854–1862) closes off Königsplatz to the west — Ludwig I had a neoclassical forum laid out here on the Greek model. The square is the monumental overture to the Maxvorstadt and at the same time its most historically charged site.

Glyptothek

Klenze's first Munich building (1816–1830) and the world's first public sculpture museum. Home to the Aegina marbles and the Barberini Faun, behind a Doric temple front of white marble.

The Corinthian temple building opposite the Glyptothek holds one of Europe's most important collections of ancient vases, bronzes and jewellery.

Lenbachhaus

Franz von Lenbach's Florentine-style artist's villa today holds the world's largest collection of the Blue Rider — Kandinsky, Marc, Münter. Norman Foster's golden extension (2013) adds a striking accent.

The star-shaped square with its 29-metre obelisk (Klenze, 1833) commemorates the Bavarian soldiers who died in Napoleon's Russian campaign. A traffic hub and a quiet centre in one.

Klenze's gallery building (1826–1836) was the largest museum in the world when it opened and a model for many European galleries. Old German masters, Dürer, Rubens, Rembrandt.

Stephan Braunfels' light-filled rotunda (2002) unites four museums under one roof: art, graphics, architecture and design. The heart of today's Kunstareal.

Friedrich von Gärtner's Romanesque-inspired court church (1829–1844) on the grand Ludwigstraße. In the choir hangs the world's second-largest altar fresco, by Peter von Cornelius.

Gärtner's triumphal arch (1843–1852) marks the transition from the Maxvorstadt to Schwabing. Its post-war inscription — »Dedicated to victory, destroyed by war, urging peace« — turns it into a memorial.

To finish, the green edge of the Maxvorstadt: one of the largest inner-city parks in the world, laid out from 1789. From the university quarter it is only a few steps to the lawn.
