Steel arch over the tracks

The Hackerbrücke was built in 1894 to connect the southern district of Schwanthalerhöhe (with the Theresienwiese) to western Marsfeld — over the many tracks of the then young Hauptbahnhof. Three mighty steel arch segments span around 80 metres; the bridge is now a listed monument and one of Munich's most distinctive pieces of infrastructure.

The Hackerbrücke became famous as a viewpoint: anyone walking from Hauptbahnhof to the Oktoberfest crosses it and looks down on the Theresienwiese fairground with its characteristic Maß-shaped tents — generations of selfies and postcard motifs. In summer 2010 the bridge was restored and given discreet LED lighting.
