European Silicon Design Center
Apple announced in 2022 that it would build a central site in Munich for the development of its own semiconductors — in response to the company's enormous need for powerful, energy-efficient chips for iPhone, iPad and Mac (the Apple Silicon platform). The investment exceeds one billion euros over several years; by 2025 the Munich team had grown to several thousand engineers.
In May 2024 Apple opened the building complex "Karl" on Karlstraße: around 30,000 m² of office space, where teams work on Apple Silicon, modem chips for iPhone (the M series), 5G and 6G technology, and wireless power solutions. After Silicon Valley, Munich is now Apple's most important chip site worldwide. Apple employs around 4,000 staff in the greater Munich area.
