Three stations, one place

The first Munich Hauptbahnhof was built in 1849 to designs by Friedrich Bürklein; the second, present-day building followed in 1873 (to plans by Heinrich Gottfried Gerber). Heavily damaged in the bombing war, rebuilt in simplified form in the 1950s. Over time the station became too small and too confusing — around 2015 the railway decided on a comprehensive rebuild.

New build until 2028

Since 2019 the Hauptbahnhof has been fundamentally renewed by Auer Weber Architekten: a new concourse, a second trunk-line tunnel station, a modern travel centre. Expected completion: 2028. During the works regular rail operations with more than 350,000 travellers a day rely on temporary arrangements — a mammoth task. The Bahnhofplatz itself is to be upgraded in urban terms.
